Maqolada lug’atlarda turizm bo’sh vaqtga sayohat, ochiq dam olish turlaridan biri, dam olish ehtiyojlarini qondirishning eng samarali vositasi, sog’liqni saqlashning bir qismi, Jismoniy tarbiyaning bir qismi sifatida belgilanadi; shaxsning madaniy va ijtimoiy rivojlanishi vositasi. Sport turizmining asosiy mazmuni mahalliy hududni tabiiy relefining tabiiy to’siqlarini yengib o’tish haqida ma’lumotlar berilgan.
